Dr. Bret Batchelor
Dr. Batchelor joined Selkirk Medical as a family physician in 2016. He is the Chief of Surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital. His full service practice includes primary care, emergency and inpatient medicine, obstetrics, and surgery. He is a registered BC endoscopist and part of the team that ensures 24/7, on-call service for complex obstetrical care and surgical services at Queen Victoria Hospital.
Dr. Batchelor completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria and his medical degree at the University of Calgary before his Rural Family Medicine training at the University of British Columbia and Enhanced Surgical Skills residency at the University of Saskatchewan. After 6 full years practicing in Vanderhoof, BC he and his family followed their instincts south to Revelstoke.
Dr. Batchelor is the provincial lead for remote presence technology enhancements in BC’s Rural Surgical and Obstetrical Network Initiative. He’s a passionate advocate for the sustainability of Revelstoke’s local surgical and obstetrical servicese, as well as rural surgical and obstetrical care for all of Canada. He is also the host of the medical podcast ‘Really Rural Surgery and Obstetrics’.
His extra-curricular interests include outdoor recreation, team sports, woodworking and music.
Dr. Sara Brown
Dr. Brown has always loved working in rural communities. She was born and raised in Creston, and grew up appreciating how small communities take care of each other. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Victoria before medical school. Upon completion of the Rural Family Medicine residency program at the University of British Columbia she obtained additional training in anesthesia and put these skills to work at Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke for over a decade.
Dr. Brown has been practicing medicine in Revelstoke since 2005. She has a family practice at the clinic and also provides emergency, obstetrical, long-term residential care and inpatient hospital care. She enjoys the variety of providing full service medicine.
Dr. Brown is the Chair of the Medical Staff Association, the Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee, local medical director of the Neonatal Resuscitation course, Co-Chair of the Residential Care Initiative through Divisions of Family Practice and a member of the Palliative Care Committee at Queen Victoria Hospital.
You may see her around town shoe shopping (a passion), walking her two dogs with her husband, biking, jogging or skiing.
Ariel Christman, Registered Midwife
Ariel is the local Registered Midwife with Selkirk Medical Group and is passionate about an integrated midwife-physician maternity model in Revelstoke!
She is a graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Bachelor of Midwifery program, delivered through the Department of Family Practice and Faculty of Medicine. She is also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
Ariel was drawn to maternity care as an advocate for families to take an active role in their healthcare during the childbearing year. She remains passionate about exploring inter-professional collaboration and its ability to fortify and sustain rural obstetrical services in BC. She has been a registered midwife since 2017 and in previous years worked with families on Vancouver Island, central B.C, and southern Alberta in varying midwifery models.
Since 2019, Ariel has grown Heartwood Midwifery in Salmon Arm into a busy, thriving practice in the Shuswap. Currently, she is completing her Master of Global Surgical Care through the Department of Surgery at UBC in exploration of advanced obstetrical skills programming for rural and remote midwives. Ariel is also a clinical lead on several regional maternity programs aimed at improving access to safe and local maternity services.
When she is not working and during fair-weather months, Ariel can be found in a Yukon creek bed panning for gold under the midnight sun.
Dr. Kurt Deschner
Dr. Deschner is a family physician with enhanced skills in Anesthetics and Chronic Pain Management. You can find him (often with a needle in hand on the lookout for myofascial asymmetry) at the clinic, ER, and operating room. He is part of the team that ensures 24/7, on-call service for complex obstetrical care and anaesthetic services at Queen Victoria Hospital. He is passionate about accessible, local chronic pain treatment in Revelstoke.
Dr. Deschner returned to BC after a stint in Pennsylvania to pursue his undergraduate degree and play some lacrosse, tethering down in his home province for the long run. He completed medical school at UBC’s Island Medical Program, Family Practice Residency in Kelowna at the UBC Rural Okanagan Program, and anesthesia training in Vancouver. Dr. Deschner spent some time working in Vanderhoof prior to settling in Revelstoke with his wife Gabrielle to take in the joys of small mountain town living while having closer proximity to their Okanagan-based family. He enjoys spending time with his family, fat biking around the greenbelt with his dog Donatello, playing music with friends, and doing his latest permaculture project in the accompaniment of their five chickens and 100,000 bees.
Dr. Victoria Haines
Dr. Haines is passionate about enhancing and sustaining quality health care and surgical services in Revelstoke. She joined Selkirk Medical Group in 2013 and balances her full-service family medicine practice, providing primary care, obstetrics, emergency medicine and surgery.
She obtained training in Enhanced Surgical Skills from the University of Saskatchewan, is a registered BC endoscopist and part of the local team that ensures 24/7, on-call service for complex obstetrical care and surgical services at Queen Victoria Hospital. She is the vice-president of the Medical Staff Association at QVH, the Revelstoke Physician Lead for the provincial Rural Surgical & Obstetrical Networks Initiative and the Medical Lead for the UBC Clinical Coaching for Excellence Program, Enhanced Surgical Skills.
Equitable, socially accountable, sustainable rural and remote health service delivery inspire her energies. After undergrad, medical school and residency at the U of S, work and service initiatives have taken her from far flung northern Saskatchewan, through Yemen, India, Zambia, the DR Congo, Zimbabwe and Ghana over the years, and includes certification in Clinical Tropical Medicine from the Gorgas Institute in Lima, Peru.
Chasing mountains and family roots in the Okanagan brought her and her husband Russell to Revelstoke. They can’t get enough of the farmer’s market, MTB and splitboard epics, sunny days in paddlecraft, the nordic track, the top of Cartier, the bears in the backyard, the…..
Dr. Travis Hunt
Dr. Hunt has been part of the medical care team in Revelstoke since 2007. He moved to Canada from the United States after practicing in Oregon for seven years. He completed his undergraduate training in Michigan, his Family Medicine Residency in Wyoming, and is now a Canadian Citizen with full certification of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
The rural practice environment and small community lifestyle have made Revelstoke an ideal location for Dr. Hunt and his family. His service delivery includes primary care, emergency care and inpatient coverage at Queen Victoria Hospital. He shares a clinic practice with Dr. Jarmula.
Dr. Hunt is thankful that he lives is such a great community with endless opportunities for exploring in the mountains, forests and rivers. He tries to get outdoors as much as possible with his partner and son whether on skis, bikes, in a canoe, or on their feet. They are amazed that this is home. His favorite restaurant is the Woolsey Creek Bistro 😉
Dr. Bart Jarmula
Dr. Jarmula has been practicing medicine in Revelstoke since 2005, balancing primary care at Selkirk Medical and emergency and inpatient medicine at Queen Victoria Hospital. He shares a practice with Dr. Hunt.
Born in Poland, Dr. Jarmula moved to Canada as a child and grew up in Calgary, AB. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary before moving to Edmonton and completing medical school at the University of Alberta.
A rural family medicine elective during his clerkship opened his eyes to the life/work balance possible in a small community and led to his choice of the Rural Family Medicine residency program at the University of British Columbia. During this time, he came to Revelstoke as a resident and liked it so much that he came right back after completing his training.
Dr. Jarmula enjoys taking full advantage of the recreational opportunities in and around Revelstoke. He is an avid backcountry skier and cyclist. You may also run into him on the trails Nordic skiing or trail running with his wife Dr. Courtney Rennie and their dog Milo. He has devoted countless volunteer hours to the Revelstoke cycling community over the years with his keen logistical sense for organizing races (strategic expertise that is also put to good use as SMG and QVH’s physician scheduling guru).
His current volunteer interest is expanding the orienteering opportunities available in Revelstoke.
Dr. Chris MacDonald
Dr. Chris MacDonald, originally a prairie boy from Saskatchewan, moved west to Revelstoke in January of 2000 with his physician wife from the island of Moose Factory on the lowlands of James Bay, ON after deciding they needed a life and seeing that the world did not end after Y2K. He studied Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, with postgraduate training at McMaster University in Thunder Bay, ON and at Queens University in Kingston, ON.
Passionate about the outdoors and rural medicine, he joined a small but special group of full service rural doctors at Selkirk Medical Group. He has been Chief of Staff at Queen Victoria Hospital since 2007 and is continuously dedicated to helping Revelstoke lead in the way in rural health care delivery by striving to maintain emergency, obstetrical and operative services locally. Raising his three boys is his joy, and coaching soccer, hockey, and basketball has been his reward. He enjoys taking extra time getting to know his patients and is grateful for the uniqueness of our community.
Dr. Cam MacLeod
Dr. MacLeod is the Managing Associate at Selkirk Medical Group. He provides full spectrum family practice encompassing pediatrics, chronic care, mental health, plus emergency and inpatient medicine, and residential care at Queen Victoria Hospital.
Dr. MacLeod graduated medical school from Queen’s University in 2000, and the UBC Rural Family Medicine Residency program in 2002. Prior to moving to Revelstoke in 2007, Dr. MacLeod worked in Inuvik, NWT for four years where he was Chief of Medical Staff, Beaufort Delta Health and Social Services Authority.
He was born and raised in Ontario but upon moving he and his family quickly fell in love with the mountains, the people, and all that Revelstoke has to offer. Whether coaching volleyball or waxing their Nordic skis, he enjoys being involved in the busy lives of his two daughters.
Revelstoke has proven to be everything he’d hoped both personally and professionally. He considers himself fortunate to have found such a fulfilling career in such an exceptional community.
Dr. Kate McCarroll
Dr. Kate McCarroll was born in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia and attended medical school at Dalhousie University. She moved to Nanaimo to complete her Family Medicine residency, and since finishing in 2010, she and her husband have practiced rural family medicine in several beautiful mountain communities including Rossland, Golden and Revelstoke.
Dr. McCarroll shares a primary care practice at SMG with the other Dr. McCarroll, her husband Kirk. She also holds a Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) in Care of the Elderly, from the University of British Columbia. In addition to primary care for all ages, her special areas of interest include senior’s health, long term care and palliative care and she provides consultative services for these patients with her team at Revelstoke’s Seniors Health and Wellness Centre. She is the past Medical Director of Long Term Care for Interior Health West and the current Physician Lead for the Revelstoke Chapter of the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice. She is a Co-Chair of the Revelstoke Residential Care Initiative through Divisions of Family Practice and a member of the Palliative Care Committee at Queen Victoria Hospital.
The McCarroll’s have two beautiful, active young boys who keep them very busy. In their spare time they enjoy skiing, swimming, camping, canoeing, biking and just being outdoors in the wilderness in and around Revelstoke.
Dr. Kirk McCarroll
Dr. Kirk McCarroll is a family physician with enhanced training in Anesthetics. He and his wife, Dr. Kate McCarroll, share a family practice at Selkirk Medical Group. He especially enjoys his emergency medicine work and is part of the team that ensures 24/7, on-call service for complex obstetrical care and anaesthetic services in the operating room and ER at Queen Victoria Hospital.
Dr. McCarroll completed medical school at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. He moved to Prince George to complete his residency in the Rural Family Medicine program through the University of British Columbia. After practicing for two years in remote communities in both Nunavut and British Columbia, he pursued additional training in anesthesia as a way of gaining advanced skills in his areas of interest which include critical care and perioperative medicine.
Dr. McCarroll also works to support access to high-quality surgical services throughout rural and remote communities in BC in his role as Family Practice Anesthesia Network Lead for the Rural Coordination Center of British Columbia.
He feels fortunate to practice in Revelstoke, to raise his family in a community with world class opportunities for recreation and the very best educational opportunities for their children. This man loves to kayak.
Dr. Cam Molder
Dr. Molder is a family physician with Enhanced Skills in Obstetrics and Anesthetics and has been with Selkirk Medical Group since 1993. His bustling practice includes primary care at the clinic, plus emergency and inpatient medicine, obstetrics, surgery and anesthetics. He is the Chief of Emergency Services at Queen Victoria Hospital, and is part of the team that ensures 24/7, on-call coverage for complex obstetrical care and anaesthetic services in the operating room and ER. He is also the Revelstoke site coordinator for the University of British Columbia’s Medical Student teaching program.
Dr. Molder studied medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in 1992. He then undertook an extra year of anesthesia training in Edmonton and further surgical obstetrics training in Vancouver.
Initially, he moved to Revelstoke for the mountains, but has stayed because the people of the community made it a tremendous place to raise his family. Find all the climbing routes he’s set and bolted in Revelstoke Rocks!
Dr. Andreas Mostert
Dr. Mostert’s family medicine practice at Selkirk Medical includes Enhanced Surgical Skills. Born and raised in South Africa, Dr. Mostert completed medical school at the University of the Free State in 1989 with special training in emergency medicine, obstetrics and general surgery. After 13 years of work in the bundu he crossed the pond for Canada and delivered full service rural care in Saskatchewan for eight years, before joining the Revelstoke team in 2010. He brings his broad experience and special interest in obstetrics and surgery to Queen Victoria Hospital, and is part of the team that ensures 24/7, on-call service for complex obstetrical care and surgical services at Queen Victoria Hospital. He is also the Revelstoke site coordinator for the University of British Columbia’s Family Medicine Resident teaching program.
Outside of medicine, his interests include skiing, mountain biking, hiking and photography. Try your Spanish with Dr. Mostert! He has made frequent volunteer trips to Columbia.
Dr. Courtney Rennie
Dr. Rennie rounds out her practice at Selkirk Medical Group and Queen Victoria Hospital with committed leadership as the Chief of Obstetrics for QVH.
She was born in Brighton, England and grew up in Lethbridge, AB. She graduated with an undergraduate degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1998, a Master’s of Science from McMaster University in 2000, medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 2004, and ultimately completed residency in Rural Family Medicine at the University of British Columbia in 2006. She finished her last four months of residency training in Revelstoke and 2 weeks after graduating started her full time practice. Time sure flies when you’re having fun!
Dr. Rennie’s full-spectrum service encompasses clinic, emergency and inpatient medicine, residential care and obstetrics. She is one of the directors of the Revelstoke MoreOB Obstetrical Quality Program and the Continuing Medical Education (CME) coordinator for the Revelstoke physician community and local chapter of the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice.
She loves to be outside backcountry skiing, Nordic skiing, road biking, mountain biking, hiking and paddle boarding, giving Dr. Jarmula a run for his money. She’s an avid traveler and aspiring guitar virtuoso.
Dr. Kim Veale
Dr. Veale moved to Revelstoke in 2010 with her husband and young son looking for an active, vibrant community to raise their family. They came to check out the snow – and stayed because they fell in love with Revelstoke and the sense of community they found.
Dr. Veale grew up in a small community outside of Calgary and completed university and medical training in Calgary and Prince George. She has also spent time living and skiing in Fernie. In all of her past experiences, she’s been lucky to find a great group of people to surround herself with – and Revelstoke has been no exception. She shares her primary care practice with Dr. Wild.
Dr. Veale has a special interest in orthopedics and obstetrics – high needs in our young active community! She is one of the directors of the Revelstoke MoreOB Obstetrical Quality Program. She is also the physician member of Revelstoke’s Child and Youth Mental Health Collaborative, and provides a monthly clinic on site at Revelstoke Secondary School.
Watching our dynamic community grow and change, and being engaged in responding to its evolving needs inspires her.
Since moving to Revelstoke, her family has grown, and she now has two kids with her husband. She feels lucky to live in a community where her children can be active, safe and engaged in their environment. Dr. Veale loves to ski and mountain bike with her family.
